Job Vacancy, Research Associate in Semiconductor Quantum Optics at Telecommunications Wavelengths

Vacancy for Research Associate within the Department of Physics and Astronomy, in the semiconductor physics group (https://ldsd.group.shef.ac.uk), University of Sheffield.

The role will involve performance of quantum optical experiments and electromagnetic modelling to develop quantum nano-photonic devices operating at telecommunications wavelengths. Particular emphasis will be placed on devices operating at GHz speeds, based on enhancements of emission rates in nano-photonic cavities.

You will have responsibility for quantum optics research on nano-photonic structures fabricated in our state of the art clean rooms in Sheffield. The structures will operate at the telecoms wavelength of 1.55mm. As appropriate you will also have responsibility for design of new structures using commercial electromagnetic software packages. Typical examples operating at 900nm may be found in Nature Nanotechnology 13, 835, 2018. The light emitting elements will be semiconductor quantum dots emitting at 1.55mm grown at the National Epitaxy Facility in Sheffield, with quantum dot optimization carried out in close collaboration with the facility. The experiments will be carried at liquid helium temperatures, with training in cryogenic techniques available as appropriate. The post will involve close collaboration with crystal growers, device fabricators and other postdocs and PhD students engaged in quantum optics research in the group.
