NEF’s First Virtual Open Day & ECR Event
We successfully hosted our first ever Virtual Open Day and Early Career Researcher (ECR) event on Monday 13 April, bringing together researchers, industry representatives, and students from across the semiconductor community.
The morning session, held from 10:00 to 12:30, offered attendees a comprehensive introduction to the Facility. Highlights included a live virtual tour of the Sheffield cleanroom and a series of presentations showcasing NEF capabilities and access routes. The session opened with an overview by Dr Zofia Bishop, followed by insights from NEF research staff. Speakers included Dr Edmund Clarke, Dr Hui Jia, Dr Elisa Sala, Dr Menno Kappers, and Dr Paul Fry, who presented on topics on MBE, MOVPE, Micro-Transfer Printing and Characterisation. The session concluded with a live Q&A, providing attendees the opportunity to engage directly with NEF experts.
In the afternoon, the ECR-focused event (13:30–16:30) delivered a series of inspiring and practical talks aimed at supporting early career development. Dr Edmund Harbord of the University of Bristol shared his fellowship application journey, while Prof Rachel Oliver of the University of Cambridge provided guidance on successful grant writing. Transition from academia to industry were explored by Dr Ben Stevens from IQE, and Dr Lata Sahonta of Kubos Semiconductors concluded the session with insights into founding a start-up.
Both sessions, delivered online via Google Meet, were free to attend and attracted a diverse audience, including PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, academic staff, and industry professionals. The event highlighted NEF’s commitment to fostering collaboration, supporting emerging talent, and strengthening links between academia and industry.
Thank you to all of our speakers and attendees who contributed to the success of the day and we look forward to welcoming participants to future events.
