Recent Events/Conferences

Staff at the Facility have been to various events and conferences over the past few months, promoting the Facility and their research:

UK National Quantum Technologies Showcase

Dr Zofia Bishop attended the UK National Quantum Technologies Showcase on the 7th November, exhibiting with the University of Surrey’s Ion Beam Centre.

The event, held at the Business Design Centre in London, is the largest quantum event in the UK.

It was associated with the Institute of Physics Quantum Week, celebrating the first 100 years of Quantum Science and Technology and the International Year of Quantum.

Royce Growth UK Symposium 2025

Dr Zofia K. Bishop and Dr Edmund Clarke, from the Facility in Sheffield, and Dr Menno Kappers, from the Facility in Cambridge, attended the Growth UK Symposium in East Horsley, Surrey from 12th-14th November.

The event, organised by the NTPMI (National Technical Platform for Materials Innovation)  highlights the wide array of cutting-edge thin film research being facilitated by Research Technical Professionals in the UK.

They gave introductory talks on Molecular Beam Epitaxy and Metal-Organic Vapour Phase Epitaxy growth techniques, and an overview of the Facility.

Quantum-Meets-Nano Workshop 2025

Prof Rachel Oliver gave an invited talk on ‘Porous nitride semiconductors for quantum light sources‘ at IOP’s Quantum-Meets-Nano Workshop 2025 in London on 17th November.

The event aims to bring together experts, early career researchers and physics students to discuss opportunities and challenges in the advancement of nanoscience and technology for the benefit of quantum science, as well as the contributions quantum science and technology can make to further nanoscience.

Quantum Dot Day

Dr Elisa Sala gave an invited talk on 18th November at IOP’s Quantum Dot Day on ‘Exploring the MOVPE growth of Droplet Epitaxy InAs/InP Quantum Dots for Quantum Photonic Applications‘.

The events brings together researchers working on quantum optics, spectroscopy, spin physics, transport, devices and applications, synthesis and growth of semiconductor quantum dots, and defect centre-based quantum emitters in diamond, Silicon Carbide, III Nitrides, and other material systems.

REWIRE-IKC 2025 Showcase

Prof Rachel Oliver attended the REWIRE-IKC 2025 Showcase on 18th November, with her group in Cambridge.

The showcase was focused on next-generation power electronics and power semiconductors, and bringing together expects in academia and research, industry leaders and innovators, and policymakers shaping the future of semiconductors and power electronics.

IOP Quantum & Nanotechnology Undergraduate Day

Dr Nick Bailey attended IOP’s Quantum & Nanotechnology Undergraduate Day in London on the 26th November.

The event was focussed on motivating undergraduate students to undertake careers or PhDs in quantum technologies. Nick’s talk covered the use of MOVPE and MBE, and how they are used to produce quantum devices as well as my PhD experience and perspective on the opportunities they provide.
