PhD Studentships & Open Day

Funded Studentships

There are six funded PhD studentships available for the Autumn 2023 intake within the National Epitaxy Facility.

The studentships will be based on the research and development in the growth of compound semiconductor materials and devices, gaining expertise in Molecular Beam or Metal-Organic Vapour Phase Epitaxy, and various device characterization techniques.  You will be trained in one of the world’s leading centres of excellence conducting research at the forefront of developments in next generation semiconductor materials and devices.

Four of the available studentships will be based at the Facility’s main headquarters at the University of Sheffield, and one with each of our partners at the University of Cambridge and University College London.

The studentships will be best suited to candidates with a keen interest in semiconductor materials, devices and characterization techniques, and a solid background in semiconductor physics or engineering.

Open Day

We are holding a PhD Open day on the afternoon of Wednesday 29th March 2023 for undergraduate students interested in undertaking a PhD with us.

The Open Day will be held at the facility’s headquarters at the University of Sheffield, and will include lunch, an overview of the facility, and a tour of our labs including cleanroom.

The open day is a great opportunity for students to find out more about the facility and the studentships we have available.
