About Us

We provide collaborative access to world class expertise and facilities, enabling top-rate scientific research in physical, engineering and biomedical sciences through III-V and Silicon technologies.

Welcome to the National Epitaxy Facility

  • The Facility is a consortium between the Universities of Sheffield, Cambridge and University College London and is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council as part of a network of National Research Centres.
  • Our mission is to provide a range of high-quality bespoke epitaxial wafers and devices that underpin world-class semiconductor research to UK academics and industrial customers, and to support the impact of this research in the scientific and industrial strategy of the Nation.
  • The University of Sheffield has been providing such a service to the semiconductor research community since 1979.
  • We provide a full range of group III-V semiconductors and Si/Ge-based group IV materials by both the MBE and MOVPE techniques. Based on these materials, and working with our extensive network of users, we also produce a broad range of novel devices including LEDs, lasers, quantum circuits, transistors, advanced detectors and solar cells.

We also organise the UK Semiconductors conference which is held annually over the summer. For further information, dates and registration details visit the conference website: http://uksemiconductors.com

Please take some time to browse our web-pages to review our extensive facilities, the range of our epitaxial capabilities and a selection of case studies highlighting our world-class research.  You can take a virtual tour of our cleanroom facilities here.
