Job Vacancy, Research Associate in Mid-Infrared Photonics

You will be based in the Semiconductor Materials and Devices group (SMD) in Sheffield and will carry out research into novel mid-infrared photonic devices and their manufacture in integrated photonic platforms. The focus will be on investigating a range of new materials and device concepts that will lead to the integration of technologies such as III-V sources, detectors,
optical fibre, 2D materials and silicon/germanium photonic integrated circuits. The work is aimed at new applications in mid-infrared sensing and imaging and will address the manufacturing approaches to integrated devices as well as novel device and system concepts.

This post is funded by the EPSRC Future Photonics Manufacturing Hub (http://photonicshubuk.org), a major collaborative programme between the Universities of Sheffield and Southampton. You will work closely with project partners in Southampton, epitaxy experts in the National Epitaxy Facility in Sheffield and industrial sponsors working with the Hub. The vision of the Hub is to play a leading role in driving innovation in photonics manufacturing by addressing major challenges in device and materials integration. The post holder will undertake high quality research in collaboration with leading researchers and industrial partners. She/he will be encouraged and supported to attend international conferences, and to publish research findings in learned society journals.

A strong scientific background in semiconductors and semiconductor device design and fabrication, especially mid-infrared, is essential.
