Job Vacancy, Research Associate in Integrated Photonics

This post is funded through a new EPSRC research grant “Zero-change Manufacturing of Photonic Interconnects for Silicon Electronics” and brings together the expertise and research strengths of the Universities of Sheffield and Strathclyde.

The post holder will be based in the Semiconductor Materials and Devices group (SMD) in Sheffield and will carry out research into novel Photonic approaches to improving the speed, energy consumption and functionality of CMOS integrated circuits for applications in both conventional and quantum computing. In particular, the project aims to develop pioneering, high speed, ultra-low energy vertical cavity lasers (VCSELs) to create optical connections on CMOS chips in a highly innovative geometry. The research at Sheffield will focus on the development of new VCSEL devices, creating suitable integration strategies and methodologies for VCSELs and evaluating the systems-level performance of arrays of integrated devices.

The post holder will work closely with experts in the National Epitaxy Facility (https://www.nationalepitaxyfacility.co.uk) at the University of Sheffield and with project partners at the University of Strathclyde who will develop the techniques for integrating the lasers with CMOS silicon electronics. The project also includes industrial partners and a collaboration with Stanford University. The post holder will undertake high quality research in collaboration with leading researchers and industrial partners. She/he will be encouraged and supported to attend international conferences, and to publish research findings in learned society journals. There is a strong focus on innovation and on the manufacturing aspect of the technology as well as a need to pioneer new research approaches.
